This post really has nothing to do with weblogs, but is mainly just a verbalization of the amazement I have for technology. Read on.
I have the ability to buy things over the internet, without moving out of my chair. Then, I can pay for those things using a service that takes the money directly out of my bank account. Need to check if it went through? No worries, I get email messages with confirmation numbers, and then I can check my bank account balance and summary online to make sure everything is kosher. If I get a tad impatient, I can use websites like FedEx.com to track my shipment all the way from it leaving the factory down to when it lands in my mailbox.
I’m able to be contacted anytime, day or night. During the day, people can email me and I’ll get it immediately if I’m at my computer. If that’s not urgent enough, you can instant message me, or if I’m away, I’ll leave a message that tells you where I am and most likely when I’ll be back. If the circumstance is more dire, then you can cell my cellphone which is on me nearly 100% of the time, anywhere I am, except at the gym cause that’s annoying 🙂
If I’m taking a trip, I can use a website to give me precise directions from anywhere to anywhere else (in my country.) I can book hotel rooms without using a phone, and they’ll know who I am when I arrive at my destination. And when I get there I’ll probably be hungry, so I can use my cellphone to find local restaurants, and then get directions to them too!
Does this amaze you guys too? I realize that I know a great deal about the technologies that make this possible, but as I step back a bit and view the big picture, it’s really amazing what technology lets us do in our day-to-day lives.
