Six Apart: Six Miles From Relevant

Yesterday Six Apart announced Movable Type Enterprise and v3.3 of their web publishing software, and what’s funny is that I didn’t find out until today that any announcement was made. Normally their software launches have been a big deal in the blogosphere, but for the past 6+ months the MT buzz factor has been languishing and their previously evangelic user base has been leaving them for greener pastures. I only found out about the announcement from Paul because nobody was talking about the release.

Movable Type Enterprise still doesn’t seem to be the MT Pro version we’ve been promised for a few years, so if you were hoping to be able to add new data fields or edit old ones then I don’t think this will let you do it. Some “catch up” features present on this release include the ability to easily add small pieces of functionality into your blog (widgets) and change the look and feel of your blog and admin UI without too much hassle (transformer plugins, style catcher).

To add insult to injury, Six Apart doesn’t think highly enough of its own blogs to bother writing about the news on them, instead opting for a typical press release that can’t be Trackbacked or commented on. This solidifies the direction that Six Apart is now headed in: a direction far away from their base supporters and fans.

For Sale: Nokia 770 Internet Tablet + ThinkOutside Bluetooth Keyboard

Okay guys, it’s time to sell these two toys to fund my golf habit. Back in January I wrote about the huge cool factor behind the 770, and although I still think it’s extremely cool I just don’t use it enough to warrant keeping it. I’ve actually only used it about 2-3 hours max since I bought it early this Spring, with the keyboard only in use for about 30 minutes.

Here’s a review of the keyboard, it’s a beautiful little gadget that works perfectly.

Both the 770 and the keyboard for $260 USD and they’re both in pristine condition. Shoot me an email via the contact form if you’re interested in buying them!

Update: Sold!

Design Hot Or Not, Inaugural Edition

What would the start of the week be without a little design reflection? Starting today I’m creating a new category called “Design Hot Or Not” where I pit two site designs up against each other in a no-holds-barred reader opinion boxing match. In today’s crystal ball we examine two new site designs: one from new-comer Mind Petals and the other a redesign from Gawker.

Mind Petals

Mind Petals is an independent content network like 9rules, but it’s focused on young entrepreneurs. 9rules Member and design master Matt Brett rocked the pixels for this fresh and well-designed site. I’ve heard on the grapevine that the client’s design direction focused on inspiration from 9rules, and that’s pretty evident in the design. They even have their own 10 Petals For Success (link), not to be confused with our 9 Rules (link) which Paul came up with three years ago. Inspiration must be in the air, as their parent company site Cash Campus smells a bit like 37signals.com. Ahh the sweet smell of copy and paste.

Coming Soon: RIM Blackberry/WiFiBerry

Just a few days ago RIM’s Co-CEO/Chairman announced that many Blackberry features will be added to models coming out “by the end of the year” with WiFi support, image capture (camera), and MP3 playback capabilities on the short list. After settling the lawsuit earlier this year, RIMs subscriber numbers have been growing steadily, and although they recently announced the 8700 line I’m sure that at least one new product line will be coming out in Q3/Q4 2006 as per their announcement.
